Very occasionally I'll get a nasty smell (never smoke) from my exhaust. Actually it happens in both my 9k and the 900SE. It smells literally like sh*t mixed with rotten eggs. I was told this was a result of some funky fuel. I'd bet a dying cat could cause this too.
Also, could the white smoke be a sign of impending head gasket doom or loose head bolts? Usually white smoke means coolant or water is being burned and bad turbo seals would result in blue smoke from oil being burned.
But then again, you have the turbo whine so I could be just rambling here :)
