A rapid clicking is usually a sign of low battery voltage. Two things come to mind-
Yes, it is possible the starter is having alot of trouble, or that the engine is very hard to turn. I assume you've checked the oil, and that it doesn't look contaminated.

You can have the best battery in the world, but if the cables have corrosion or the ground points are bad, you'll get a massive voltage drop, and the resultant clicking. The solenoid won't have enough power to extend the starter to engage the flywheel. The first thing I'd do is make sure all of the contacts are clean. Polish up the contacts on all mating surfaces. Inspect the cables for corrosion. Possibly pull off the battery negative lead where it connects to chassis and clean up the mating surfaces. Try this test - measure the voltage on the batter POSTS with the car off. Now, turn the headlights on, and make the same measurement. That will tell you how much the battery voltage has sagged. Maybe 1/2 volt is reasonable. If it droops much more, the battery is tired.

If the battery seems OK, measure the voltage between a post and it's clamp. Lights still on. The voltage drop should be less than 0.05 volts. Any more voltage drop, and there is a bad connection. Measure from the negative battery post to the chassis. Again, no more than about 0.05 volts with an electrical load.

Assuming you've got FULL confidence in the battery and electrical wiring, then the next thing I'd do is pull the fuse to the fuel pump. Then pull off the DI and disconnect it. If there is any dirt/grit around the spark plugs, clean it out either by blowing compressed air or suck it up with a shop vac. Then pull all the spark plugs. Now try and turn the engine over a few times. This is about as unloaded as it comes. The engine should turn free. If it doesn't, I'd worry about the engine being siezed. The reason to clean the area out is to keep it from sucking grit into the engine. Disconnect the DI so it won't be damaged.

Peer into the cylinders to make sure nothing is living there.
