Hi Kelly,

I believe the autoboxes are all the same ZF HP-18, but someone correct me if I'm wrong. Several of us have cars with autos, some are Aeros, some turbos, and some NA's. I believe that the things to look for are:

1) has it ever been replaced? (my 92T one owner-me has been, another 92T I purchased used had been - got the paper work with the car.) this means a couple of things, it's newer than the car , and the owner either got it done under warranty or spent the cash to get it done. He was taking of business. All good things.

2) see if the transmission has been *serviced* at good regular intervals. Backup my computer? I didn't know it had a reverse! Some just don't understand maintenance and it's impact on longivety.

3) sometimes lower miles are not necessarily the best, as in if you have low enough miles (under 100k) problems with the Auto may not have surfaced, yet. On low milage cars pay extra attention to service of the trans, on higher milage look for a replacement but still look for service interval.

4) in general, if the car has needed alot of maintenance on other running gear it *may* (or may *not*) mean hard or heavy use on the auto box. Replacement of Turbo, Radiator, CV joint, brakes, might indicate hard usage. The auto runs just fine if you change the fluid, put the additive in it, and don't force it to kickdown alot (ie hot rod it). I just did a 189 mile round trip into LA to get another car. avg 25mpg, 20 on the way up at 80-90 mph, and almost 30 on the way back with the flatbed truck following me at 65-75 mph.

in any event, you pays your money and you takes your chances... that MTBF calculation could need to balanced against the good experience I've had with mine, with somebody living at the dealer, and *you* could be on the short balancing side of that equation - or not.

do a search on dboone, he has Aeros with Autos and good things to say about taking care of them.
