May be a dodgy switch on the selector lever. The control 'signal' is a 3 bit grey coded binary number which can be 1 of 8 values. Some of these aren't meaningful, so the EDU doesn't display any selected gear for those values. May be that someone spilt a drink down there at some point in the car's history - was the case on my '97 CSE which still doesn't always display 1 & 2 positions.

There are 2 switches on the selector lever, one for the EDU display, the other for the starter inhibitor, revesing lights and idle increase when putting into D or P (the infamous orange wire which also tells the Trionic ECU that the car is an automatic so limits midrange boost/torque, can be defeated (along with reversing lights, rear windows, sunroof, lighter socket, cruise control...) by removing (the equally infamous) Fuse 9 for a bit of fun to give full 'manual' boost levels - only works on FPT cars though and you may get erratic boost in 1st and 2nd, engine may stall when shifting into D/R from N/P)
