...and you can't rely on the back-and-forth test for tie rod ends either, because sometimes if you have soft steering rack bushings you might get a false alarm.
Better check for these components is to get the car in the air, and using a suitable prying device, apply some pressure to the ball joints/tie rod ends, and see if there's any movement there. There should be none with the ball joints, and little with tie rod ends.
It'd be odd for the strut bearings to be the cause of looseness without you having a horrible symphony of clunks and clanks going over even the smallest of bumps. Normally failed strut mounts manifest themselves as noise but don't affect feel especially.
