The code is stored, so you can read it out later. The light doesn't have to stay on for the code to store.
Reading can be done with a switch and wire, or just a piece of wire. Check the FAQ, and under 9000, check out the "LH Overview". Also check out the Townsend site, specifically:

You've got the LH2.4.2 system, but readout for the LH 2.4 works just fine.
For about $20 some places sell a LH tester - all it consists of is a switch and the proper connector to fit into the socket. Nice to have, but easy enough to make up yourself - check the FAQ and Townsend.
