Admittedly they may have changed the behaviour of overboost cutoff for the Trionic vehicles compared to my old '87. However, my impression is that it's gentler in the newer vehicles. In either case, overboost fuel cutoff should not cause the engine to die, nor should sparks be flying out of the rear. I've also never heard of a loud bang associated with it. It sounds to me more like you have a problem with the catalytic convertor. Perhaps parts of it blew apart? That would account for your CEL, as your car has a 2nd O2 sensor after the cat, to make sure the cat is operating properly. I think it's unlikely that your transmission has any problems, given that it's shifting smoothly. And, I've never heard of an automatic transmission failure which caused case destruction such that parts could be flying out and sparking on the road.
