This is something of an old chestnut. You're quite right, PBS needs to search the archives on this topic - and I speak as someone who has suffered two auto rebuilds over the past ten years. I know you've had our own transmission problems too.

The ZF auto transmission can fail catastrophically, or it can last for 200k miles. While it's working the combination of auto tranny and 200 bhp is made in heaven, and I really love the "point and shoot" feeling it gives.

Manual gearboxes. gear selectors and clutches can also fail with time and are not cheap to fix. Plus, the manual change isn't all that special anyway.and and at my age I know I can change gear and no longer need to prove it.

No ten-year old car will be cost-free to run, and the purchase price is rock bottom compared to a modern box with no character at all, so you need to budget for stuff like this.

This board hears about problems, because that's what it's for. It also offers solutions, and many things in the auto transmission can be fixed or adjusted without removing the unit. Check out the recent posts - starting, headliner, lights, locks, oil consumption, exhausts or whatever. Other stuff goes wrong and - as the old saying goes - if you can't stand a joke you shouldn't have joined!

Having said that, PBS - if you buy the car and your 'box instantly turns into a pretzel, I can only apologise... and hope that you, too can take a joke.
