The flywheel is intentionally heavy and its momentum plays two roles that I know about. First, it helps the engine run smoothly, especially at idle. The individual cylinder firings are muted by the momentum of the flywheel. Second, it makes the car easier to drive. Without the momentum of the flywheel clutch engagement would be difficult and managing revs while shifting would be harder.
That said, you can have the flywheel lightened at a machine shop or purchase a lighter aftermarket flywheel. You’ll gain a little performance, especially at lower revs, and the engine will have more of a free revving nature that many people enjoy. On the down side, the car will be trickier to launch, especially if drag racing is your thing.
