That only showed up on cars recently.
When you squeeze the release lever, do you feel resistance, or does it move freely, like it was locked?
If you feel resistance, then press down hard on the hatch, as oldsaab suggests. That implies the latch/hatch is slightly out of adjustment, and the latch is hanging up.
If you don't feel resistance, it isn't as easy. There is a rod that runs from the release lever (above the license plate) down to the latch (at the base of the hatch). That rod has a ball-and-socket joint, and on occasion, it comes off. All the lock does is connect the release lever to the rod. But if the rod falls off, there isn't a direct way to open the hatch. It requires a little work.
Fold down the back seats, and if you can remove the folding cover, do so. Have a larger flat blade screwdriver, a thin putty knife, some torx drivers, and a flashlight. Climb in. First, remove the grab handle at the bottom of the hatch (two torx). Where the fabric panel on the back of the hatch meets the rear window, there are some plastic discs with slots. Turn the, counter-clockwise ONE QUARTER turn. They don't unscrew. With 1/4 turn, you can then pop them out.
The bottom of the cover is held on with snaps. Use the putty knife to get behind the cover at the bottom, enough to get a finger behind, and pull straight back (toward the front of the car). Not up or down. The snaps will pull out. You can then pull the cover away, and you'll see the latch mechanism. My guess is that the rod has just fallen off, usually at the top. Just pull it up to release the latch, and breathe free.
