Basically, the key to performance upgrades (see performance board for more informed opinions) hinges on software, and its ability to DEAL with what's bolted there. A turbo may put out higher PSI, but unless you deal with the software, it's never going to ALLOW that much boost.
One big, fat reason? To preserve and protect the engine, about which Saab's engineers know considerably more than you, me, or any other novice on this board. Picture, to wit: holed pistons, broken connecting rods, cooked valves, or any number of other (very expensive) damage that could result from a ham-fisted "performance upgrade."
I'd opine that there's little left to extract from these engines that Saab hasn't already extracted. What possibilities exist will mostly derive from upgrades to the exhaust system, software, and intake system, with the turbo probably bringing up the rear as far as effective performance mods. And then you have to take into account the limits to transmission's durability before you pull the trigger on horsepower and torque upgrades.
In short, just bolting on a different turbo (say a Mitsu TD04 from an Aero) might give you modest gains, but how much? It gets more complicated and expensive if you want a lot more power.
Are you asking this question because you think your car's too slow? Maybe it's in need of an adjustment someplace if you think so.
