One year seems to be WAY too short a life span for refinished wheel finishes. I'd be tempted to bring them back and say, "What's up?"
As Kevin said, you don't need it to be clear coated, but they were originally, and a GOOD clear coat should protect the aluminum and paint from the harmful brake dust, etc. which wheels have to put up with.
Well-taken car of Aero Wheels could look great after ten years of service, and more...
I'd love to have mine redone in the original two-tone. Next time I get tires, maybe.
The previous owner of my '93 Aero had painted the wheels all white, and I painted them all silver. After two years, my clear coat is getting spiderweb cracks... and I did it myself with Wurth rattle can wheel paint and clear coat. I think a wheel specialty place should have FAR better results than a shade-tree mechanic with a weekend to kill. Just my $0.02.
