Starter? Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Tue, 14 Nov 2006 06:11:45 In Reply to: Grinding noise from tranny?, Travis, Mon, 13 Nov 2006 22:13:43 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I've seen a problem with the starter where the starter motor gear doesn't retract fully right away. It grinds on the flywheel until it completely retracts. I suspect the mechanism is due to buildup of grit and wear, because it seems to not be a problem when the car is warm (and the lube on the starter is thinner).
In my case, replacing the starter fixed the problem. You might be able to rebuild the starter engagement mechanism, but if the starter is over a few years old, splurge for a replacement.
To verify, open the hood while someone starts the car. The starter is under the intake manifold (firewall side of the engine). If the sound seems to be coming from the flywheel near the back of the engine, I'd say starter.
Don't let it go for long. That starter gear is wearing, and soon it'll start losing teeth. You may have trouble starting. And worse, it's wearing the flywheel. A starter isn't that expensive to replace. The same can't be said for a flywheel.
