The 88 has a simple LH2.2 system and a distributor. No limp home modes, nothing fancy. So stick with the basics. It sounds like a New To You car, so you probably don't know a lot about the previous maintenance. And how did it run before you pulled the engine?
Stick with the basics. Do a tune up. Put in new plugs, cap, rotor, wires. Make sure the plugs are properly gapped. New fuel and air filter. Check the timing. How do the plugs look? Running rich, lean, OK? Trying to troubleshoot when you don't know if the plugs are good or if the cap and rotor are worn can be very frustrating.
Once you've got a tuned-up car, go from there. Backfiring implies an exhaust leak. Check all hoses, both around the intake and the turbo (exhaust). GOt extra hoses not attached? A few vacuum leaks? Does it idle quiet? If it does, chances are the valve timing is OK and there are no stuck valves. If it idles like a diesel, it may have jumped a tooth on the chain, or you've got a stuck exhaust valve.
