Strange cooling system behavior.... Posted by vtsnaab [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Hello.
Recently my '91 9KT had been leaking some coolant, and only when in
motion and warmed up, so the only active evidence was some wetness
near the water pump and a slight odor of antifreeze at times.
Water pump/t-stat replacements ordered and the appointment made.
On the given day, the car actually had another, unrelated problem
on the way there, BUT, when 'opened up', it became clear that the
pump was good and it was actually a small hose leak, easily fixed.
So the system was drained, hose and t-stat replaced (eEuroparts low
temp t-stat) and refilled with fresh coolant.
Later, the system sort of 'burped' and needed more coolant, no biggie,
or so I thought...
Days later it is acting very strange, and worrying me very much.
When cold, the temp gauge goes way up - and has actually gotten a
bit too close to the red and even into it once, so I have been
stopping and letting it do it's thing without strain - but it does
worry me alot - then it cycles up and down before eventually it does
settle lower than before, but it takes a while for it to settle.
Also - I am not getting heat in the cabin nearly as fast as before.
Could this be a backwards t-stat, or ???
Please help - this has me very worried !
Thanks,
mark
