Alternator Battery problems '87 9KT

Hi, I have an '87 9KT,
I was having a problem wherein my battery was dying, and so I watched
the voltmeter to track how the alternator was behaving. I found
that the alternator wouldn't always kick in when I started the
car, but that it would start charging if I revved the engine to 3.5K rpm.
I don't think rpm normally affects charging, is that right?
I had the battery checked, it was bad so I got a new one. The alternator
still behaves exactly the same, so can anyone tell me at what point the
alternator should be charging, should I read a constant 14 volts while the
car is running, or does the voltage regulator stop the charging when the
battery reaches full capacity, so that it would be ok that I see the
voltmeter show 14 volts for a few miles, and then drop to battery voltage,
around 12.5 volts?
That's what the charging system is doing now, so I'm wondering
if that ruined the battery, and if the alternator is behaving normally. Both battery and alternator were replaced 3 thousand miles ago, about
a year ago.
I lifted the car and checked the wiring, it's still very clean since
I replaced it too when I r and r'd the alternator and battery.
The EDU2 is dead, so I wired in an analog voltmeter for the dashboard.
Can a dead EDU cause secondary problems with the charging sys?
Thanks,
MichaelO
