Transmission bearings?

Hi everyone. I hope someone can give me some insight into a problem that I'm having with a 92 9000 5 speed. I was hearing some noise coming from what sounded like the front driver side wheel. I thought it might be a wheel bearing or a joint problem. But I was told that it was probably a transmission bearing that was going. There was no way to tell how bad it was without taking the whole thing apart, I guess.
Anyway, the mechanic rotated my tires and the noise went away, but now I'm left with the question of the transmission bearing. I am not able to fix it myself, and given what the car is now worth, I'm not sure I want to drop 2500 dollars into it.
I'm not sure, however, what it means that my transmission bearing is (possibly?) going. Does that mean that the trans is just going to stop working? Or are there other things that might indicate continual wear of the bearings? Is this something that should cause me to just stop driving it now?
Any insight would really be helpful. Thanks.
