1990 abs issue--is there another way?

Greetings, Friends
I have a 1990 9000T 5-speed which recently experienced a failure of the ABS pump (hard pedal, virtually no braking, and a run through an intesection that gave me grey hair!). At the time, I couldn't believe the diagnosis, since I was told that the brake pumps on these cars rarely failed--but what are you going to do?
I have since put another used (no warrenty)unit on the car, only to discover that while its pump works fine, there is an issue with a valve in it that does not allow the anti-lock function to work; I now have brakes, but that's all I have. My mechanic tells me that the only solution is another entire ABS unit. In his words: "If you see your abs light and brake fliud light go on together, you have 10 stops left before you lose all stopping power again." Needless to say, this is a rather unsatisfactory situation: I'm always checking my dash lights and wondering when things will go "pop" again.
If anyone has faced this same issue I would appreciate the following: 1.) a source for a rebuilding service for the entire ABS unit (I still have the old failed unit), 2.) Has anyone just replaced the valve part of this unit which allows the ABS function to work--i.e. not the pump part and accumulator, and 3.) is there a way to basically ditch this braking system and install another one that is free from these issues; I like ABS, but I could live without the hassle and crushing costs of it for this car.
Thank you very much for any advice/experience you could pass along
