Not bad Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: How difficult to access the seat heat grid to repair?, dave24 ![]() ![]() |
I don't bother to remove the seat completely.
Remove the plastic cover on the outside of the seat.
Slide the seat back, and remove the two Torx bolts holding down the front rails.
Slide the seat forward, and remove the two Torx bolts holding down the rear part of the rails.
Tilt the seat, rails and all, and disconnect the cable.
I just tilt the seat backwards, still in the car. The front of the seat leather has a metal clip that holds it to a metal bar. I just cut it with a nipper. I replace it later with a tie-wrap, but anything will work.
The seat leather is held in place with hooks that come through holes in the seat cushion and latch onto bars under the seat. I take a few piece of twine, each a couple of feet long (longer than necessary), and tie them to the hooks. Then pull the hooks off the rods and let the hooks go up through the seat holes, taking some of the twine with them.
You can then peel the seat cover back. Usually you only need to pull back the front outside part - you'll see a blackened part in the foam where the wire broke. Strip some insulation from the two ends (cut away any charred wire) and solder them back together. I like slipping a piece of heat shrink tubing over it before connecting it, and then using that to cover the joint. There is usually no need to replace the entire grid.
To put the cover back on, pull on the twine to get the hooks back down, and hook them over the rods.
I've had some practice, so I can usually do a seat heater in about 25 minutes, and that includes finding the tools.
