My guess: previous owner or mechanic was sloppy in re-installing the ductwork to the side dash level vents, probably while taking off the dashboard.
The fix isn't too hard: remove the dashboard top [think there's notes/procedures in the archives and on http://www.quasimotors.com/dashtop.htm ] and pay attention to aligning the ducts on the outside edges to both the side defrosters and the outside two dash level vents.
Test it before you reassemble the top: turn on the ignition, select the 'vent' and run the fan speed to high. You should feel plenty of air coming through the side vents, and zero air out of the top sides where the speakers mount.
Maybe an hour or so, could also be the time to replace any burned out light bulbs in the EDU if you have any dim/dark spots.
Good luck.
