95 CSE with 160k mi. I've been planning to replace the voltage regulator for several years now, or at least prepared to... Today I replaced a noisy idler pulley, tensioner pulley and belt. Figured it was a good time to do the voltage regulator, since I did not have a clue, other than it was on the back of the alternator and could be done in car. Figured it was a good time to be able to check it out from below if necessary.

OK, so finished the serp belt job and looked at the back of the alt, and did not see where the VR could be unscrewed. Didn't see it at all! Came in and checked past posts, Quasi's site, and still did not have a clear picture of where and how to approach. Picture! Oh yeah, I DO have a Haynes Manual. They had a great write up on replacing the VR- out of the car. You need to remove the plastic rear cover of the alt to expose the VR.

No problem, just extrapolate, remove 3 screws, positive nut, green wire nut, and pry off the cover. Didn't want to pop off. Looked for more screws, nuts, bolts, clips, nothing. Using the "If at first you don't succeed, get a bigger hammer" theory, I used a pry bar. Broke the plastic cover of the alt. Darn, and other expletives....

I won't cover the next two hours of efforts, they were futile and frustrating. Upshot is that I have a broken cover on the top which needs to be replaced or duct taped. Otherwise things are back together and running, but I have not replaced VR. Arrrgggghhhh.

What do I have to do to get the plastic cover off of the back of the alt??!! Where can I find a replacement cover for this alt?

I like working on my Saabs, and especially enjoy the savings. Sometimes, like today, I think I'm ahead paying my indy $80/hr to fix things. Thanks for your help in putting me on the right path.
