When you say they replaced the valve guides, are you sure you're not talking about the valve stem seals? These are the keys to stanching any oil leaks in the valve department.
I've always had machine shops do the following:
1. Pressure test the head. This will reveal if there's anything amiss with the head and prevent you spending money to recondition a bad head.
2. Resurface the head. Make it nice and flat -- a good shop can give you back the head with a mirror-smooth surface, though this is not necessary strictly speaking.
3. Install valve stem seals.
4. Clean the whole works.
To get these items done has usually cost me about $150, here in Connecticut. I have never had valves or seats ground and don't believe it should be necessary for Saab heads under normal circumstances. I would think this would add a hundred or more to the price owing to labor, more if valve guides are being replaced.
Are you certain that you had all that work performed for so little, or is it possible you are confusing some terminology?
Small points, but worth mentioning for those who haven't had a head machined before.
