Chris,
Can you hear an exhaust leak? I assume that you are talking about an exhaust leak. Rotten egg smell (sulfurous) can be generated by the cat process. This wasn't a suicide attempt, was it? What were you doing with the garage door closed? :)

Ok, I re-read the post. YOu noticed the smell when you opened the door. Correct? Burnt smell-sulphorous. Did the car start ok? No sign of dead animals in the garage, is there?

A very nasty sulphorous smell can be generated by a charging system run amok resulting in the battery being cooked. The battery gets very hot and continues to cook long after you put the car into the garage.
Serious overcharging results in the electrolyte (battery acid) being vented from the caps. The top of the battery will be wet with acid, and the sides of the battery will be pooched out- kinda like a little bit pregnant, and you probably won't have much water in the battery cells.

If the battery is at fault then bad cell(s) in a battery will cause the regulator to tell the alternator to charge at a high current rate with no regulation. Since the battery is incapable of coming up to voltage, the alternator just keeps puttin' the juice to it- eventually boiling (excessive gassing) the battery, ultimately ruining it. BTW, You can do the same thing by leaving a battery charger on "manual charge".

Take the car to an auto electric shop. They should:
1. test the old battery with a hydrometer for shorts and dead cells.
2. Load test the old battery. If 1 or 2 fails replace the battery.
3. Check all the battery connections.
4. Check the alternator connections. B+, field and ground connections.
5. Check the output of the alternator.
6. Replace the regulator. YOU DON'T NEED TO REPLACE THE WHOLE ALTERNATOR-WALK AWAY IF THEY INSIST ON A NEW ALTERNATOR.

An exhaust leak is an easy fix- tighten the flange nuts or in the worst case, replace the section with a hole in it.

I hope this helps.
