So a few weeks back I'm under the hood of the '95 CS my daughter drives and I noticed that the vertical upper engine mount it compressed at the front side. The mount is only 1 year old. Hmmm. But no time to investigate further. And anyway, the car drives fine, no strange noises. Then I notice that the tailpipe exits just behind the LR tire. The girl clearly backed into something when home at Thanksgiving.
I bend the pipe straightish and look underneath. The exhaust from the cat is low and doesn't seem to be aligned too well. Hmmm, again. I'm thinking that when she backed into whatever she hit with the tail pipe she broke the cat bracket.
So I take it to my indy for it's annual state inspection on Thursday. All is good but the exhaust is not aligned right. The cat bracket is fine. Then my indy shines a light up behind the engine. The rear engine support strut is broken!
So how the %$&!*?<! did she do that? Then I remember a day when we went kayaking and she drove off the road at the place where we pulled the boats out. I knew she had bottomed out the car but I didn't see any damage. Now I suspect she cracked the bracket--there are a couple gouges in the oil pan-- and then it finished breaking later.
Fortunately the car is here while she's at school and she's just using it casually the next couple weeks, and it is still OK to drive locally. My indy thinks he has a used one (or I'll get one from Goldwing) and it looks like 4-5 hours of labor. GRRRR!
But my deal with my kid is that she pays for any damage she does to the car, so she'll feel the pain first hand of dumb moves. And it does beat having her hit another car!
Ahh, the joys of kids, parenting and Saabs!
