The short answer is that it doesn't. One possible cause of turbo failure is oil starvation because of sludge clogging the oil supply line. Is it the cause of every turbo failure? Of course not. But turbo suppliers get tired of replacing their turbos under warranty when the failure is caused by a clogged oil line. So they make it a blanket requirement that the oil line be replaced and they reduce their return rate by 5%. It costs you $120 and saves them an average of $35 ($700 turbo times 5%). If you remove the line and make sure the line is clear, then you have achieved the same result. However, if it is a condition for the warranty enforcement, then you have to add $120 on to the price of the turbo when you are evaluating suppliers.

I replaced my turbo at 90K and did not replace the oil line. At 198K, the turbo is still fine. Many people have their original turbos at over 200K. I think a lot of it has to do with the quality of the oil and the interval between changes.
