I had always heard here that the amp is for the rears only. Your post is the first I've read stating that the amp powers more than just the rears.
However! Because this made me curious, I decided to check out the schematic for the '95 audio system on my Mitchell CD and you're totally right according to this. Everything from the HU goes directly to the amp, then to the speakers on this diagram (pictured).
I know one person for sure that has swapped the HK amp in and had better sound. I'll probably do that myself if I can get my hands on one cheaply. I replaced all 8 speakers with MB Quart and added an Infinity Basslink, but never touched the amp.
For sure in the '92-'94 systems, the amp only powered the rears, because I'm looking at the schematic for that too.
Sorry for the crappy screenshot image, but at least you can kinda see what I'm talking about. Good luck with your problem. I'd say you're probably right in blaming the amp for the issue.
