I have not had any problems with the hundreds of pumps I have taken apart to get them to pick up the oil again, so the grease or vaseline trick doesn't really apply to me but maybe it will be enough in your case.
Did you get both dowel pins back to align the oil pump housing?
I have seen cases where the dowel pins were removed and that was enough to get the pump housing out of alignment to not suck oil properly.
Saab had a TSB out years ago for a limited numbers of 1982 900 to remove the dowel pins and align the pump with a special tool instead.
Some mechanics read into that TSB so they removed the pins on all oil pumps thereafter.
As long as you use the special tool to align it is no problem.
