Ok, maybe I was rolling the dice. A '97 Aero, with less than 6000 mi on teh new DI cassette put in early last fall.
So I'm cruising home, just four miles away [at night, with my three daughters in the car] and 'Check Engine' flickers once or twice, with a noticeable loss of power. Tried downshifting - nothing helped. Began to coast to a stop as the engine quit.
My son came twenty minutes later with the T-30 torx and 'his car', a '97 CSE with a semi-working spare DI cassette in the trunk. Meanwhile, I'm thanking God it hadn't happened one night prior, as we drove back from Chicago O'Hare with a full car, trunk full of luggage, etc, returning home after a flight back from California.
The symptoms on last fall's failure: degrading idle, at times [fine for days, then sometimes ragged] and the loss of the 'burn-off' function after shutting the engine off [the little 'buzz' for maybe five seconds. Lots more low end spool-up with a new DI after installing it.
Humorous [well, semi-ironic] note: while we were out of town, FedEx delivered the new DI cassette I'd ordered a week prior from eEuroparts] for the CSE, because it was starting to act uneven on accel/idle at times AND a quick swap with my 'good' one in the Aero showed it to be bad. A neighbor had the parcel waiting, picked it up on the way home after the roadside rescue.
Ordered another from eEuro when we finally made it home. Two in two weeks. Is this a record?
By the way, the 'new' one installed 6k mi ago WASN'T a Saab part from eEuro -- rather, tried to 'save' $70 on a generic replacement. Yes, I've read that some guys have had bad luck even with the OEM DI ... but I wonder.
