lights are easy enough to change, but the spring terminals inside can rust away to nothing. one of mine is out, and it isn't the bulb.
as far as the brake light, it is a good idea to always replace bulbs in pairs. not only are they both the same 'age' (same number of on/off cycles) but matched new ones are, in theory at least, balanced enough for the bulb sensor. after owning a few volvos with the early sensor, i got into the habit of replacing bulbs in a matched set. i'm not quite anal enough to replace ALL the bulbs when one goes, but just give me a few years.
also, there's 4 bulbs in the CHMSL. if one gets loose, it will turn the indicator on. (CHMSL= Center High Mount Stop Light) happened to me, i put all 4 new ones in, haven't had a problem.
