I have a 1995 CSE, manual 5-speed, which I just put on the road, after having put in a new clutch, exhaust, brakes, etc. When I first get a new-to-me Saab, I always change all the fluids to get current on where things are in the maintenance schedule. This includes the transmission fluid.
For this car I decided to do the transmission oil change after getting the car on the road so that I could drain the (hot) fluid after a drive. It took me a week to get around to doing it, but I figured, no hurry, since Saab doesn't even recommend purging the MT oil.
When I openned the drain plug, I was surprised to find 90-weight gear oil coming out, and more surprised to get only about 1 cup of the stuff, not 2 liters!! I opened the fill and level plugs. The level plug was still wet with the 90-weight. To test that what goes in comes out, I poured a bit of motor oil in, which immediately drained out.
After filling the transmission with 2 liters of Synchro-Shift synthetic, I drove the car. All was well. BTW, the transmission was not showing any signs of distress, before or after the "oil change". It shifts beautifully and makes no noises, stays in gear, etc.
So how long has the MT been so empty? I see no signs of leakage. This is a "remanufactured component" (has a tag to that effect). The magnetic drain plug was in the fill hole, not the drain hole. Could be who ever installed the rebuilt transmission didn't check the fluid??? (They didn't change the slave cylinder either, which was needed when I got the car.)
I drove the car for about 400 miles, I know it had to have at least an additional 100 miles from where the dealer bought it from auction. So that's 500 miles at least.
Wonder what the future will be like.
