If you remove the switch you will notice there are two pins on the back of the switch. The third connection is to ground through the mounting screw. The reason for two contacts is so that only the door that is opened lights up the light located in the door. If there was only one contact, all of the door lights would be on when you opened any door.
To test the switch, remove the switch, take the two connectors off of the back of the switch, and alternately ground each connector to see what happens.
I bet it is the switch. It is cheaply made, and the driver's door gets the most wear.
