Upper Radiator barb broke, piece in engine!...?

This happened a few months back, with a little help from the local Dealer. The plastic barbed end from the upper outlet of the radiator broke off. I discovered it after the hose blew off at 70 mph on the highway. I think most of the pieces were recovered, but a small piece may be in there. Is that the return hose into the engine? If a piece is in there could it get into the water pump or catch in the thermostat? What's the worst that could happen?
Also, tha hose has blown off a couple times, cuz the barb is not there. I finally wrapped a nylon tie around the hose on the engine side of the clamp and anchored that tie with another one to the body crossbar in front of the radiator. Best short term fix I could think of until a new radiator is needed.
Thanks for any comments.
