What I always, lazily refer to as the PCV valve is really the "PCV nipple", which is where the PCV hoses connect at the valve cover. It actually has no valve function. The check valve itself is a separate item, downstream of the PCV nipple, in the smaller of the two PCV hoses -- referred to as the "PCV check valve." Hopefully I'll be accurate in these labels in the future.
What seems to be a pattern in turbo failures is the death of the internal thrust washer, which leads to destruction the oil seals and contact of the compressor/turbine elements with the housing, compromising all three. Most DIY rebuilds I've heard about lasted briefly, most often apparently because of fore-and-aft movement along the turbo's axis, once again killing the oil seals. It's probably true that if only your seals are the problem, a rebuild should work. However anectodal evidence (people I've talked to, postings I've read here and elsewhere) as well as rebuilders' comments convinced me not to try it, because so often there are other problems.
For me, the two recent turbo failures I've seen featured one complete lockup, and one with so much play it felt like the thing was suspended in jello! I agree, these are stout turbos, but with age and varying owner maintenance, eventually failure is a possibility.
Finally, on head gaskets, oil and coolant leaks are not always simultaneous, so you won't necessarily see oil in the coolant if the gasket isn't bad "in that way." Of course, my test might fail to detect a bad head gasket if the coolant system isn't the problem (i.e., an oil leak to the cylinder or something like that). As to soot, you shouldn't be getting any soot if your combustion process is correct (although if your head gasket is bad all bets are off) so you might not see visual evidence of combustion gases unless the problem is extreme and goes on a long time. Unlikely, since head gaskets usually make themselves obvious before then.
Sorry for the confusion.
