It might not be called Pole Position in Europe, but I think that's just a name difference if the results in the tire test linked below is anything to go by (in german unfortunately).
I don't think the RE050A name with or without Pole Position has ever been used in Europe before now, so the previous versions may just have been specific to the american market. It would make more sense than only supplying an inferior version to the market that, as you say Bill, have more use for high speed performance.
Click on "Alle Testergebnisse im Überblick: Tabelle" and you'll get a table of the results of the different tires. A lower number is better and best grade possible is 1. From those results it scores higher than all the other tires in the test, including Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 and F1 GS-D3.
