Car stopped - doors locked - no warning!

My SAAB 9000 CSE '96 suddenly stopped running this morning, with no warning. Just driving along and it stopped, and I could not get out of the driver door, though managed to get out of the passenger side. We have about 130,000 miles on the clock.
The lights and all the electrics worked, and turned the key a couple of times and could hear it trying to start - but stopped that in fear that I was going to make it worse. The 'Check Engine' light came on. All very frightening.
It has been towed to the garage. Last week they ordered new brake callipers for the back wheels, as the car has twice this week been leaking brake fluid, which happened after they repaired this, replacing the fuel lines if I remember correctly?
Also had a new heater core installed a week or so ago, and the filter that goes with it on this past Friday when I took it to the garage because the brake fluid light came on again and the fluid was almost out.
Anyway, now have no car until a hire one tomorrow, but in the mean time could anyone give any suggestions as to what could be the problem.
Thank you.
Mary in the north of Maine
