I for one, have always, and will continue to always use whatever el-cheapo oil I can find (currently on a kick of using Super Tech from Wal-Mart), and a good filter. As long as it has the quality ratings on the container (Which I think all oils for sale to the public have to), you're good. I religiously change my oil every 3000 miles. My father also did this; use whatever cheap oil was available, and a good filter, and in probably a million miles of driving on his end, and a couple hundred thousand on my end, we've never had one failure on any of our vehicles related to the oil.
Unless its full synthetic, which definitely has its benefits (I ran it in my 1992 GMC Typhoon and currently run it in my 1969 Z/28), I personally think that oil is oil, and as long as you change it frequently using a good filter (Wix / NAPA Gold only for me)
How many people out there probably use that Max Life or some other hokey oil to extend the life of their car, but run an air filter for 100,000 miles, never flush the coolant, never change their transmission fluid, and grease all the grease fittings? More than likely, a ton.
