if this is a 92 model the only door with the internal switch for the central locking is the drivers door... Given that it always unlocks (which requires that the relay be used) and sometimes/oftentimes does not lock... I'd say that the suspect item is in the actuator that attaches to the switch. I believe there is a rod that hooks to the key switch and that hooks to the switch (but I'm not entirely sure about this). Some sort of either adjustment or wear to it seems the likely culprit. All of the bits are necessary to both lock and unlock. So either the switch itself has a bad contact, the relay has a bad contact on the lock side, or the rods and cones (joking) aren't pushing the switch far enough.
Consider either getting a loaner or junkyard relay to test, if that still fails it's in the door in either the switch or the push rods.
