I replaced the tensioner pulley, idler pulley, and belt on wife's Aero, and a few days later it shredded. Closer exam showed that when the AC kicked in the shock would bounce and the belt would move over on the pulley. A new shock prevented the bouncing, and the belt has been trouble free for several years.
Fair amount of discussion on the board about when to replace, but basically observation of whether the shock moves slowly when a new load is put on, and the heavy resistance when you put tension on the shock when removing the belt are indicators of a good shock. Not a bad idea to just replace when replacing the pulleys and belts every 60k. Tough to drop an additional $100, but even tougher to get stranded, replace a new belt, and still have to cough up the $100 or much more at an inconvienient time. Everyone has a different tolerance for preventive.
