like Ari suggested. coolant gauge coming up is a good sign the thermostat is working. if it's stuck open, engine never warms up, no heat comes out, mileage suffers.
just looked at this last night for a friend. a chunk of ice fell down and moved the arm to 'cold'. (servo broken, arm gets moved with the seasons)
for the record, back (towards firewall) is hot, front (front is front) is cold.
the arm is just past the rectangular pollen filter cover (maybe 2 x 10 inches) and down in that well. tough to get down there with more than just a couple fingers.
i jammed a piece of junk plastic in there to keep the lever from moving on her car. heat = happy! (it was 10° F here last night)
