I used to get a similar cel, and i think i traced it to extended periods of the engine running lean on fuel, and there was an actual code that i pulled from the system that said that.

Gosh that was so long ago... but i believe the problem was being caused by a sensor underneath the dash... an overboost proection sensor. Trace the vacuum lines under the driver dash towards a flat sensor bolted upside down to the underside of the dash. there is a vacuum line and a single lectric linerunning to this. figured out it was the sensor because my engine would run fine with either the vacuum line unhooked or the electric line. I'm sorry I'm so vauge on this, maybe someone can confirm or deny this sensor beng a possibility.

I also had a problem with the knock sensor in my 90, it was a bad connection on the sensor end and it was constantly sensing knock, and retarding timing. I had a lot of problems with the di/apc system on my 90, it's a system all on it's own of that year. Try a search of my past posts, I may have discussed the solution.

I have decided to go with a different engine management system than the di/apc, but i have some di/aopc and ECU performance chips leftover specifically meant for a 90 turbo that i may be listing on the classifieds section here soon... if your son is trying to "beat on" the car and get it to go real fast on the highway, he may benefit from some chips that increase the power... and the 90 is limited on performance upgrades...
