The V6 in the 9-5 is a different beast than the one in the 9000. There are some folks that swear by the 9000 V6, and good luck for them. Most folks swear at them (the engines). There weren't a ton of V6 9000s, and there are a lot less now.

Wandering around on the 9-5 board, you'll find that the V6 in the 9-5 is as good as the 4 cylinder in terms of reliability, and in some cases, possibly better. The DI issue occurs in both, but it may be somewhat less common in the V6. In terms of maintenance, both have their pros and cons. Depending on the type of driving you do, the V6 might have slightly worse gas mileage (e.g. around town). On the highway they're about the same, and driven aggressively, about the same.

I've driven both, and while they feel different, both are pretty good engines. In general, if you're looking used, the V6 cars come better equipped. A few years back my wife and I were looking for a 9000 replacement, and after much research came to the conclusion that either a turbo 4 or the V6 would be just fine - we'd base the individual car on condition, mileage, maintenance records, and price. That says a lot when I'm not concerned about what's under the hood.
In the end, we found a nice '97 9000CSE, which my wife likes much better than the 9-5. But the time will come when there aren't 9Ks out there, and either flavor of 9-5 (wagon, of course) will be the only option.
