I had an '87 900S while my wife had an '88 9000 turbo. Then I got a '91 9kt, and then she got a '95 9000 CSE. So we've sampled quite a few of the Saab models.

Did your '91 900 turbo have the Aero wheels? I remember a Saab brochure from that time period showing a Talladega Red 900 turbo with those wheels. It looked awesome. Although the 9000 series can also look awesome, I'll always remember that photo as exemplifying just what a Saab can look like.

I always got the feeling that the 900 handled better than our '88 9000 turbo did. It felt crisper, more nimble. But one day she was following me as we were taking both our cars somewhere, and I was watching how her car handled behind me. On a downhill turn, my car exhibited understeer, and hers did not. So I started experimenting with her car, and I found out it could hold the corners at least as well as my 900. Somehow, with the 900's shorter wheelbase or something, it just felt more responsive. But in reality, it was no better at handling, and perhaps not as good with regard to understeer.

Then I got the '91 9kt, with its sports suspension. And I put thick roll bars, poly bushings and Koni shocks on the back, as well as better brake pads and new Brembo rotors. It's fun to drive. There's your Saab spirit right there. Going through a cloverleaf on the highway entrance can put a smile on your face. Or not, if there's a really slow driver in front of you.

Our '95 was much softer, but it was a CSE, not an Aero. You have a stiffer suspension in your Aero. There are also suspension mods you can do, and tire choice makes a big difference in how the car feels. On my '91, I have Nokian NRVi's, which I plan to buy again.

I can understand your feeling of letdown, but I predict you'll feel differently, once you get to do some summer driving.
