I agree with Dave (it's one of those days!) Motor mounts. Age is one factor, but if the bushing in the upper mount (torque arm, aka 'dogbone')are shot, that will kill the lower mounts. Or the lower mount can be broken by just one extreme event. So I'd inspect the upper and lower mounts (and the transmission mount). If the engine and transmission move, the shifter will move, so I suspect the motor mounts. Now, the engine and tranny are mounted to a sub-frame, and it could possibly be the sub-frame mounts. But if those are shot, you'd feel that in very loosey-goosey handling (that's a technical term).
