The rpm vs roadspeed is entirely a function of transmission gear ratios. A car with a V6 or V8 may be designed to have a lower ratio, but it's not inherently so. I think the issue is getting confused on that point. I'm sure I could find examples of V6s with the same or higher ratios as some inline 4s. The smaller engine needing high rpm to make horsepower argument doesn't make a lick of sense. HP is a direct function of torque and rpm. So really, any engine requires high rpm to produce maximum power. If the engine supplies 252ft-lb of torque at 1800rpm, as the 5spd Aero does, I would say that's pretty good and probably better than the majority of V8s of similar vintage. Most car companies won't even tell you the torque rating at that rpm because it's so poor.
