I want to start tackling this smoking issue of my wife's 94cs. It has a red NJ emission sticker since October. This is the car which threw a rod in May of 2006. I replaced the engine right after. The culprit I think is the leaking turbocharger which depleted the engine oil. Although it was never confirmed. I found the turbocharger on the damaged engine having excessive longitudinal play. I am one who never checks the oil level during the 10,000 mile oil change interval because my 9k's don't consume oil. But before the failure the car ran without visible smoke indicative of a leaking turbocharger so it is speculation on my part on why the engine threw a rod.
Anyway the first time it went through inspection after the engine replacement it failed with high HC. I posted the numbers I think in October time frame. At that time it cannot be the turbocharger any longer because I also replaced the turbocharger along with the engine. A few weeks later I tried again the inspection station won't even do it because of the visible smoke.
I suspect the valve stem seals were bad. So even though it is driveable and nothing else was wrong it was sidelined inside the garage since December.
I pulled the spark plugs tonight. The tips were somewhat shining black as if coated with a thin coating of oil. It is not the normal light brown color. I thought before I dig deeper I test compression. The numbers were very good, 185, 190, 203, 192.
Is it the valve seal? Where else do I round up the usual suspects?
