I am in northern VT, and see temperature swings from -30 to +95 with high humidity as well. My father, my brother and I have all run nothing but cheapest 5-30 non-synthetic in vehicles ranging from 2.8 and 4.3V6 (one turbo 4.3) S-10's, small block chevys, turbo and N/A Saabs through the years, an International Scout, lawnmowers, lawn tractors, snowblowers, pretty much you name it and its had el cheapo 5-30. Our combined driving has to be a million miles, and none of the 3 of us have ever had any kind of engine failure related to the oil. Change the oil often, let your car warm up and keep after maintenance and you will be fine.
I know the proof is in the pudding that synthetic oils are better than conventional, but my point is, after 76 years of combined driving in a wide variety of turbocharged and n/a vehicles, I'm going to keep running a thin viscosity cheap conventional oil.
