Thanks for the tip, but I gapped them carefully at 1 (spec is .9 to 1.1), but the good news is that the problem seems to have been a clogged fuel filter -- replaced it and the CEL has stayed out for about a day and a half, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
Should note that a similar CEL and missing that was Tech II diagnosed a year ago as defective DI turned out to be a vacuum leak at the intake manifold. New gasket and manifold planing completely resolved that one. So I guess the moral ia that even a good tech with a Saab Tech II is not always able to pinpoint the problem. Both times the fix came from an independant mechanic with no scanner but good car-sense.
