I had an '88 9kt, and its oil capacity with filter change is just over 4 qts. I like to be up to the M in max, and it takes 4.5 qts to do this.
The choice of viscosity depends on weather. I wouldn't run 10W40 in the winter, but it would probably be fine in the summer. Some run 20W50 in the summer, but this seems a little too viscous, considering Saab's recommendations for the 2.0 and 2.3L engines in the 9000's.
I switched to all synthetic (Mobil 1 0W40) last year and go 5000 to 6000 miles between oil changes.
