shorter positive cable burned - kinda long

I was driving home from work and my radio & DVD player suddenly cut out then came right back on, twice. The next morning all was fine. Then that night as I was backing out of my parking spot my car just died, got about 5 feet out. I noticed smoke from under the hood so I popped the hood. The shorter positive cable's insulation was burning off. I got the car home & replaced the burned cable and notice that a small section of the other positive cable had worn or burned insulation near the starter. I taped up that section real well & hooked everything back up to a different battery, and still nothing. Is it possible that it just grounded out from the section that was unprotected, then shorting something out?? I have no power on anything at all in the car (94 9000 Aero). I am unable to find a "main fuse" that may have blown and have no idea what may have shorted out causing this no power issue. Any ideas at all????? Its been four days and I am starting to lose it!
Thanks,
Mark
