This tale combines my experience and the info from this web site. My 88 9000S was starting poorly when warm, making periodic moaning noises and stalled when the tank was almost empty. I diagnosed this problem correctly as fuel feed pump failure. The web site and Haynes book confused me as to what type of pump I had and what type of parts I needed in addition to the feed pump. I have a Bosch system where one easily pulls out the pump assembly. See Saabmasterr site for picture of this system. I was scared about whether I had the type of system that needed both the special homemade tool to remove the top and replacement fuel line nipples. The Bosch system needed none of these although I obtained them in advance out of caution. The $35 fuel feed pump I purchased from AutoZone was an Airtex E8381. It did not fit exactly, needing a trim job on the pump neck to fit in the holding bracket.
The good news - IT WORKS GREAT NOW. My gas mileage has increased and the car runs more smoothly. I suspect the pump was failing for quite some time resulting in a lower fuel pressure and resultant performance degradation.
